As the old saying goes…

“Those who ignore history are destined to repeat it.”

Teachers have been telling this to their students most of the twentieth century. Although most children hear their teachers say it, many children hear it and classify it as something their mom would say, like “Don’t run in the house.”

Retiring teacher, Paul Zosel (Fergus Falls Public Schools), shared words of wisdom with his students in an interesting way. He had in his classroom a “Words of Wisdom” bulletin board with a number of famous quotes for the students to read and reflect upon. He shared such quotes as:

“How a man plays a game shows something of his character; how he loses shows all or it.”
– Unknown

“Only those who do nothing at all make mistakes… and that would be a mistake.”
– Unknown

“There is no such thing in anyone’s life as an unimportant day.”
– Alexander Woollcott, American author

Each quotation that he shared had a bit of a different message, but each also encouraged the readers (his students in this case) to think and reflect back on the things of the past so that they may proceed onward to a brighter future.

We can also learn something from this story and our history as well. We all make mistakes and we all have bad days from time to time. The important thing to remember is that there are vital lessons to be learned during mistakes and hard times. Some learn these lessons more quickly than others but that is all part of the process.

Don’t forget the things that have happened in your past, as well as the historical events that preceded us. They are both very important in helping mold who we are today. If we did not listen to our mothers warn us not to run in the house, we may have bumped our heads on corners or walls a time or two. But, eventually, we learned, became wiser, and changed our actions so that did not happen again.
