Looking Back to Move Forward

With today’s technologies, you can pause your DVD player, your satellite TV, your songs playing in iTunes, and for some, you can even pause your video games. If the things we use for enjoyment and relaxation come with pause buttons, then taking the time to pause occasionally may be important in other ways as well. Too much of any one thing all at once is not good for you – our bodies need time to pause, recover, and regroup – and this line of thinking carries over into other areas of your life as well.

When you set your eyes on a goal, it is important to look forward to see where you are going. However, it is just as important to pause, glance backward, and remember where you have been.

This reflection time is vital to helping you reach your goals in life. Remembering what has already happened gives you a chance to Stop, Look, and LEARN what did or did not work for you in the past. It helps you to see your successes more clearly and helps you avoid making the same mistakes twice.

Although sometimes we don’t like to think about our past mistakes, they are vital to our forward progress and attaining success. Mistakes may be things we would never want to relive and often do not care to remember, but they provide vital information that we need in order to move forward with our lives, as well as our businesses.

George Santayana said it best when he said:

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

This is definitely true, especially if the mistakes we remember from our past were especially embarrassing. 😉

Here’s another quote that helps remind us the importance of reflection, but also offers warning about NOT dwelling on the past too long:

“Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.
Soren Kierkegaard

Pause a little, reflect a little, then move… Think of it as a rest-stop during a long road trip – pause, rest, refresh, think about the way you just went, check the map, and get back on the road. Use your lessons from your past, and then get on down the road – your hopes, dreams, success, and future are waiting!
